Today I woke up feeling down, for no major reason other than thinking I messed up a job interview on Saturday so I tried to motivate me to go for a walk, it took me an hour or two for me to finally get motivated to go.
I got the bus from Milnsbridge to Marsden train station and instead of walking up the canal towpath, I walked along Reddisher Road towards Standedge. After just over a mile I reached the beautiful Eastergate packhorse bridge. It then took another mile until I reached the Pennine Way, crossing the A640 and walked another 2 miles until I reached where I wanted to be…
The Trig Point on Moss Moor, the views from here were breathtakingly beautiful, I spent nearly half an hour just staring at the never ending views over Manchester and Rochdale with Pendle Hill and the Lake District out in the distance. I really found it hard to turn around here, I was almost at the foot bridge that crosses the M62 and the Pennine Way stretched out further into the distance, I could even see Stoodley Pike Monument over 6 miles away in Todmorden and I could easily carried on walking straight on but the light was starting the fade and the cold wind was picking up so I thought “THERES ALWAYS NEXT TIME” turned around and set off back.

It didn’t take as long to get back to the A640 but when I got there I had three choices to make….
- Carry on along the Pennine Way to Manchester Road then down into Marsden
- Walk along the A640 before turning off and taking the path down to March Haigh Reservoir and down into Marsden past Eastergate Bridge
- To take the same route I took earlier in the day down to Eastergate Bridge and onto Marsden
I found myself wanting to stay put and get some photographs of the sun setting over Manchester but I had to carry on, I didn’t fancy being stuck up there in the dark. I crossed over at Manchester Road and felt a little relief as I could see I was getting closer to Marsden, the sun well and truly setting behind me, my feet ready for dropping off I was back in the centre of Marsden and back in civilization just in time to catch the bus home. Again, I felt great after another good walk, yeah the exorcise probably does help fight my depression but it’s the breath taking views I’ve been lucky enough to see today that’s done it this time. I used to work in Manchester and it felt weird looking at the busy city from the quietness of the Pennine Way!
