Today, I was only intending to go over to Holmfirth to take a few photographs, I’m now writing this after an exhausting 10mile hike…
I got to Huddersfield and I had just missed the 314 bus I was going to catch to Holmfirth, but then I noticed that the Holmfirth bus that passes through Honley and Upperthong was due in, I then remembered that I wanted to go to Wolfstones Heights trig point to take some photos since I saw it in a Facebook group the other week and saw how beautiful the view was from there. Anyway, I decided at the last moment to jump onto the 308 bus, I figured it has to be better than standing in Huddersfield bus station for the next half hour until the bus I wanted turned up. I then got off the bus at the top of Knoll Lane, Honley, removed the camera from my pack and started the what was meant to be the short walk upto Wolfstones.
Once I got to the top, the walking bug kicked in and I soon found myself looking at my Ordnance Survey map and noticing that I’m not too far from the Pennine Way so yup, I soon decided to make my way towards where the Pennine Way crosses Greenfield Road. Once I got to the Ford Inn, I remembered how busy Greenfield Road gets, I hate walking on busy roads so I decided to cross over and walk along Green Gates Road, towards Digley Reservoir. I remembered from passing the area in a car awhile back that there are some great views, even with the weather being the way it was (misty) I thought it was still breath taking, I was able to see across the valley over the reservoir and the winding road that goes up to Holme Moss, although I couldn’t see the mast.

Once I reached Digley, I found the route for the Kirklees Way and noticed on the map that it emerged on Greenfield Road next to the Pennine Way which I needed as I could join the Pennine Way there and walk down into Marsden. Here, I soon started to regret this move as it was very boggy and the mist was making the light go down sooner and faster than expected. After checking my map and working out exactly where I was I carried on and pushed myself forward as I knew it was quicker to keep going forward than going back. Once I was on the track on the open moors, the mist started to lift and the light lifted, it didn’t take as long as expected to get to Greenfield Road even with the amount of photos I was taking.
Once I got onto the Pennine Way above Wessenden Head Reservoir, it was an easy walk down to Marsden, it did take an hour to walk down and by the time I got there it was pitch black. I was knackered and muddy but I loved the walk and I managed to take 256 photographs. I have been lacking motivation to go walking recently and could feel my depression coming back but this has fixed it and I can’t wait for my next walk, hopefully next week!
